Audition for Steaming by Nell Dunn

I will be directing Steaming at Davenham for performance from Wednesday 19 February to Saturday 22 April 2014. Rehearsals will begin as soon as possible after the auditions, and take place twice-weekly from 7.30pm to 10.00pm, with up to three Sunday rehearsals (afternoons or evenings).

Auditions will be held at the Theatre at 7.30pm on Monday 2 December. If you cannot attend that evening, but want to audition, please contact me at home (‘phone 01270 626215; email park50@hotmail.com), so that we can arrange to meet at an alternative time.

Steaming takes place in the early 1980s in an East London public steam bath left over from the Edwardian age. The personalities of its female manager and clientele are explored as the baths are threatened with closure. Nell Dunn was a cutting-edge writer on social and feminist issues in the 1960s and later. Not a great deal happens in the play, so the emphasis is on establishing truthful characterisation, and showing its development through humour (it is very funny). A London accent, and a willingness to appear on stage in bathing gowns or capacious towels, is essential.

Roles
Violet Baths manager, forties, chatty
Bill         Baths handyman, a small role, heard but not seen, so any age!

Mrs Meadow Client, sixties, Dawn’s mum, decent, worn out
Dawn Client, thirties, friendly, innocent, has learning difficulties,
Nancy Client, thirties, more middle-class than the others

There is some flexibility about most of these indicative ages.

Davenham member Denise Barry who has organized this concert says

We've known Chris's father  for many years. Chris is from Lancashire and we saw his concert in a packed hall in Lancashire a few months ago. I thought our audiences would love his type of music so I was excited when I managed to secure a booking for 15th November.
Chris has been a professional singer for many years and has performed many times in Nashville with John Denver's lead guitarist. He has a wonderful voice and his performances are both captivating and memorable.
After speaking to our audience members I was surprised at just how many people are fans of John Denver's music, therefore I urge you to book early to avoid disappointment.

Neil McSweeney is a songwriter and musician based in Sheffield, England. His acoustic guitar playing style combines folk, blues and country influences but it is his voice, likened by The Guardian to a male Tracy Chapman, and his direct and personal lyrics for which he is most recognised. His first album, Remember To Smile, was released in 2006. After a warm response from national press and radio, London-based Warner subsidiary Kids got involved for a couple of singles. Neil decided once more to self-release for his second album, Shoreline (2009), which again garnered strong reviews and caught the attention of Richard Hawley, leading to support slots in the UK and Europe.

Neil's third album 'Cargo' is recorded by leading trad-folk producer Andy Bell, and features the talents of BBC Folk Musician of the Year nominee 2013, Sam Sweeney, Lucy Farrell, M.G. Boulter, Brooks Williams, Andy Seward and many more.

“Deeply felt, brooding songs rich in imagery. He has the tools to make a huge impact.” **** The Guardian

“McSweeney is the genuine article. Highly recommended.” **** Daily Express

“Steelier than your average troubadour.’ Q Magazine

“Songs so subtle and well-crafted that you can’t help but be drawn in…they deserve much wider acclaim.”DrownedInSound.com

"A Cream Cracker under the Settee"  by Alan Bennett
- with Margaret Smith as Doris, aged over 80, who is a tidy woman — and when she suffers a fall after trying to clear up after her considerably less thorough home help, Zulema, she contemplates her life. Alone and injured, she wonders whether the only place left for her in society is a care home which she distrusts.

"A Lady of Letters" by Alan Bennett
- with Vanessa Duffy as Miss Ruddock. Irene Ruddock is a working class single woman who is not afraid to speak, or rather write, her mind: she writes letters to her MP, the police, the chemist – everyone she can, to remedy the social ills she sees around her. After one too many accusations of misconduct from Irene's pen, she finds herself on the wrong side of the law and in a new but entirely liberating environment.

"Effie's Burning" by Valerie Windsor
- with Sue Elliott as Dr Kovacs & Angela Orme as "Effie". A local hospital ward provided the location in 1987, where Effie a disoriented woman in her sixties, is being treated for burns suffered during a fire at her nursing home. She appears highly concerned for her life-time friend - Alice. It quickly becomes clear that her child-like quality and reluctance to interact with the nursing staff stems from the fact the she has lived most of her life with Alice in a mental institution. But why was she there? This short play examines the callous brutality of bureaucracy and families when children do not turn out as they wanted.

Paulette's July Newsletter

Hello folks,

Firstly, we don't yet have a date for an audition for our Autumn production Breathing Corpses but watch our for an announcement after the Summer break.

In recent weeks, after a fabulous production from Physical Folk of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ , we ladies had a fun evening at the Swap Shop which raised £68. Jamie ran one of his quizzes last week, always a good evening enjoyed by all, thanks Jamie.

Thanks go to Pam Molloy who raised £175 from the sale of her calendars and Barclays doubled the money with their £ for £ scheme.  A very worthy effort, - Thanks Pam !

Last week some of us went to the Cheshire Theatre Guild’s award night in Chester as Pam was nominated for best supporting actor for ‘The Curious Savage’. The play was also nominated in another category. Neither won but it was nice to be nominated and mentioned,  as were both the plays we had adjudicated, the other being Barbara Crellin’s very successful ‘God of Carnage’.

While we now take a break for the summer and catch up on those much needed repair jobs there are plenty of events coming up in the autumn.................

Sept 7th Arts/Craft day- anyone wishing to have a table to display and sell their arts etc please book with me £5 per table. I already have several booked. We will be combining this with a book launch of Mike Beddard’s 2nd book for children at 2pm in the afternoon on the day.
Details from me- tel: 01606 79779

Sept 11th - 14th Tin Shed production of 3 short plays , Effie’s Burning, A cream Cracker under the  Settee, and A lady of letters.

Nov 6th -9th Davenham/Tin Shed production of ‘Breathing Corpses’ by Laura Wade, directed by Graham Hough

Nov 15th – Musical Evening with singer Chris Bannister: those of you who liked John Denver will appreciate this talented singer.

Dec 7th  Cabaret evening Xmas party with a hot supper.
This is down to you members and friends to come forward to perform an item of your choice, you can do anything you like.  We are meeting on Sept 18th at 7.30pm to discuss your ideas and plan a running order and any rehearsal time you may need.
Get your thinking caps-- no ideas, no party!!!

For jazz events, please click on Jazz
For the full calendar of events, click on Diary.

As mentioned earlier, there are always jobs needing to be done around the theatre. It is an old building and in constant need of maintenance. We have a fantastic person in Arthur who is constantly working to improve the place. Together with Bob and Graham they beaver away with several other members who are always on call to clean, serve on the bar, run events, set up, take down and generally help out.

We need more help. Please offer IF YOU CAN.

Any help will be gratefully received. It is your theatre and it cannot operate without your help.........................

That’s all for now folks. Enjoy the good weather and have a good summer.

NEXT PRODUCTION

Many of you have heard of the Oscar Wilde story Lord Arthur Savile's Crime but, possibly have no idea who Lord Arthur was, what was the crime and what happened next. I recently found out, but don't worry – this is not going to be a plot spoiler.

Wilde's story was first published in late 1887. The principal character, you will not be surprised to learn, is the eponymous Lord Arthur, who is introduced by Lady Windermere (no doubt the one who had the fan?) to chiromantist Mr Podgers who reads Lord Arthur's palm and tells him that it is in his future to be a murderer.

Lord Arthur wishes to marry, but decides he cannot risk doing so unless he has fulfilled his inevitable destiny by actually committing a murder. That's all I intend to say about the plot apart from saying that Lord Arthur sets about finding a suitable victim and deciding upon a modus operandi with some comic results. You had better come along yourself on Friday 10th May to find out how this story is (or is not?) resolved.

Lord Arthur Savile's Crime is also going to be a new kind of experience for Davenham Players, being the first time dp has directly engaged a professional company to stage a show at our theatre.  Rocket Theatre, a Manchester-based company led by Martin Harris will present a comedy and fun adaptation of the classic Oscar Wilde full-length play performed by two actors. According to What's On Stage, "Martin has wisely kept many of Wilde's unforgettable lines resulting in "an hilariously funny black comedy" – "a cracking production of a witty play which brings pace and energy to the piece". Click here  for more information and booking details.

THE CURIOUS SAVAGE

Thanks to all who helped The Curious Savage be a successful production with a deft comic slant and touching story. This was a real ensemble production involving most of the dp committee, which meant that there was no one left to run the Bar and Front of House. Fortunately, Ann Wilson organized the Bar rota and FOH. I am glad to say that Savage  brought in FOUR newcomers to dp. Kelly Cowley (Arthur Jones' daughter) George Ogazi and Richard Stanley joined the cast and Jerry Park from Nantwich Players was our guest Director. Using an outside director was somewhat of an experiment for all, but worked well (with a few learning points).

AND THE ONE AFTER THAT...

... promises to be different to any production of this William Shakespeare play I have seen before. Physical Folk present a community production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Helena loves Demetrius, Demetrius Loves Hermia and Hermia loves Lysander. The Fairies have fallen out over a stolen child and the Mechanicals want to put on a play at the Duke's wedding. Come back with us to the 70s and laugh at the magic, mischief and mayhem. Tickets available through www.danarts.org or 01606 784442

FUTURE PLAY SELECTION

It has been a long-term failing of the Players that
  • ·         we don't schedule our drama programme far enough ahead and
  • ·         too often we leave Directors to find a play they like with no guidance from us.

We are fixing these problems by forming a small Play Reading Group who will compile shortlists of scripts ready for group Play Readings. Starting now, we will also be scheduling play weeks well into the next season. If you have any favourite scripts, or feel you would like to direct a future Davenham production, then get in touch with me or any of the committee.

THEATRE EXTENSION PROJECT

Earlier in 2013, the dp committee authorised expenditure to pay an architect to prepare a Feasibility Report on how we can improve audience access at the theatre.  We have been aware for some time that our theatre has fallen behind acceptable standards, especially the toilets and awkward entry for audiences up and down stairs. We asked the architect to design a new foyer, box-office and toilet area with no-stairs access and make the experience of seeing a show easier and in keeping with modern disability standards. As a second priority, we also asked the architect to look at level access to an enlarged bar with improved service counter. The architect had to ensure that any changes would be
  • ·         compatible with the theatre's location within the Davenham Village Conservation Area
  • ·         sympathetic to neighbours' concerns
  • ·         in accordance with local planning and building regulations.

The Feasibility study has been produced, has been costed and has also been sent to the Cheshire West and Chester Planners for informal review.
One thing is certain – it is not going to be cheap and we don't yet know whether we will be able to find the money to pay for the building work. One thing we do know is that the theatre is paying its way much better than it has in recent years. The music events especially are bringing in some much-needed revenue and we are always looking for new ways in which our theatre can be used to promote the Arts – one example is our September Arts and Crafts day to be repeated this year on Saturday 7th September after a successful launch in 2012. I hope to have more news on the Theatre Extension Project at the AGM on Wednesday 5th June.

NORTHWICH LITERARY FESTIVAL

The Players Theatre is hosting one of the events in the Northwich Literary Festival. Sunny Ormonde, who has been playing the outrageous and raunchy Lilian Bellamy in Radio 4’s The Archers for the past 12 years and has become one of the listeners' most favourite characters is coming to Davenham on Saturday 29th June at 7:30pm. Click here for more details on the dsp Blog.

ANNUAL CHARITY ART LECTURE

Adrian Sumner will give another of his excellent illustrated lectures on art at the Players theatre on Tuesday 18th June at 7.30 p.m. (Doors open at 7.00pm) in aid of MacMillan Cancer Nurses and Saint Luke's Hospice. This year's subject is Flights of Fancy - a History of Birds in Art. Tickets, at £8 each, can be bought or reserved from Caroline Stevens on 01606 42920 or from Eileen Moncrieff on 01606 784204 from Monday 6 May. The ticket price will include a drink and the entire proceeds of the event will be divided between St Luke's Cheshire Hospice and the local Macmillan Nurses' fund. All are warmly invited to what should be, as always,  a very interesting and entertaining evening.

POCKET PANTO SUMMER SCHOOL

If you have a child with leanings towards drama and in the age range 7 – 16, you may be interested in the Pocket Panto Summer School, which visits Davenham again this August in the week beginning Monday 12th August 10am to 4pm daily. Numbers are strictly limited, so don't leave it too late to enquire. Cost is £120/£100 per child. Click here for more details.

FILM RECOMMENDATION

If you have read this far, then Well Done !

This has nothing to do with the Players, but I just wanted to recommend a film that came out in 2008 which I recently saw on DVD. The story is an adaptation of a Noel Coward play also called Easy Virtue – a comedy romance starring Jessica Biel, Colin Firth, Kristin Scott-Thomas and Ben Barnes. The settings are great and the musical score is 20's style and really makes the movie. Watch out for a superb scene-stealing Butler played by Kris Marshall !

Tickets can now be booked for The Curious Savage by John Patrick, guest directed by Gerry Park and presented by Davenham Players. Paulette, our Hon Sec would normally write this email, but owing to her having the principal role (Ethel Savage) in the play, she is far too busy. In fact, you may well see several of the dp committee taking part in the production, just to show that we can act as well as serve behind the bar and sell tickets.

The play, described as a ‘comedy fable’ is suitable for all ages. It tells the story of a widow who has inherited millions from her husband and wants to give it away -  much to the distaste of her three adult stepchildren. What can she do to escape from the sanatorium into which they have committed her to stop her doing anything rash? Will the proud Savages get their hands on the money they consider to be theirs or will Ethel succeed in establishing a memorial to the husband she loved?

You may purchase tickets immediately online via the DAN website
Alternatively, phone or email Graham Hough on 01606 835582 or graham.hough@btconnect.com

Charges are £8.00 Adult / £7.00 Concession. Doors 7pm. Curtain up 7:30pm.

The Davenham Players Newsletter March 2013
The autumn saw a very successful  production of  ‘Playhouse Creatures’ by April de Angelis, directed  by Felicity Goodman . The Xmas party followed and those that came enjoyed a tasty hot-pot supper and entertainment from a close harmony group.
In February, Barbara Crellin directed ‘God of Carnage’ by Yasmina Reza. This play had only just been released for amateurs to perform and we were the first in the area to do so. This was a very thought provoking play and the four cast members did a sterling job. Well done to Barbara, who also designed the very striking set.
Rehearsals are under way for two forthcoming productions :-
Jerry Park, from Nantwich is directing, ‘The Curious Savage’ by John Patrick  from 10th-13th April. This is an American comedy about a wealthy widow whose step-children are trying to get their hands on the money for which she has other ideas. The cast of 11 includes new member George O’Gazi in his first Davenham role. We welcome back, Andrea Scott and visitors  Kelly Cowley ,[Arthur’s daughter  and  who has acted at Davenham before] and  Richard  Stanley who came late into the play but is doing a great job.
Felicity Goodman & Tom Barry are producing  ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream' from 22nd-to 25th May. This production involves players from around the community as well as our own and promises to be very exciting.
New Directors Wanted!
It is always nice to have a visiting director and we are ready to welcome them. In the October newsletter I have asked if anyone wished to try their hand at directing. So far, there have been no takers! Come on you young and talented people, pick a play and put it to the committee!  All you need is a strong feeling about putting on a certain play; the experienced old hands will help you! We have no one to produce the March 2014 play and  there is a possible space in November this year. Please contact Ed Green on 01606 784442 if you feel you can help.
Ticket Secretary.
Although we have started to use the Danarts online facility to book tickets for plays, we also like to have a phone number  as many of our audience do not use computers. Bob Almquist usually fills this role and as he is in the current play, Graham Hough has kindly offered to do the job. However, it is a position that needs filling, so if any of you, member or not, feel they could offer their services, please contact Bob or myself.
Jazz
Ed, Harry & Dave have been busy booking Jazz events up to next year. These prove very popular and play to packed houses each month .  Thanks go to those 3 for their continued hard work.
Building.
The care of the building has, as always, kept us busy. The committee has been investigating the possibility of providing better toilet facilities and a foyer on the ground floor and are going through the process of having plans drawn. Of course all this costs money and so we are also applying for grants. If anyone feels they have any ideas for fund raising or wishes to help with grant application please contact Bob  Almquist on 01606 45186.
A big thank you goes to Mavis Green, who has  had the mammoth task of  repairing and remaking some of our stage curtains.
Social.
We thought that this year the Xmas party should take on a different form and are planning to hold a ‘Cabaret’ evening on 7th Dec. This has been done in the past and is good fun.
So ....... what does it entail? Well .... basically  the programme is made up of  anyone  performing anything! This could be absolutely anything,   singing, dancing ,reciting, playing an instrument, performing a party piece such as fire-eating or sword-swallowing .... more or less anything .  There would be no charge and we would bring food. Bring along your friends to watch and if they want to perform too, that’s great.
All we ask is that you let us know by October what it you are doing so that we may have a couple of run-throughs to establish a running order.  Please get your thinking caps on as, if there is a poor response, we cannot run this.

Bookings are now open for the next Davenham Players production - The Curious Savage, by John Patrick and directed by visiting director from Nantwich Players, Jerry Park. The play opens on Wednesday 10th April and runs until Saturday 13th April - doors open 7pm and curtain up at 7:30pm.

"The Curious Savage" is a gloriously funny fabulous comedy in the tradition of the 'gentle' comedy - suitable for all ages. The play starts after the principal character and widow Mrs Ethel Savage, has been left millions by her husband. She wants to make the best use of it as she sees it, despite of the efforts of her grown up stepchildren to get their hands on the money. Knowing that she has full control of her wealth, they commit her to an institution in the hope of getting the money away from her. But in this enchanting comedy Ethel Savage leads her grasping stepchildren on a merry dance with a little help from the strange band of misfits who live in the institution.
