THURSDAY 26TH FEBRUARY - JAZZ @ DAVENHAM – Slowlight Quartet
Jazz@davenham, in conjunction with Northern Line, present the Slowlight Quartet on Thursday 26th February. The lineup is Jonathan Marriott – drums, Ian 'dodge' Paterson – bass, Paul Lorraine – keys and Tom Quilliam – sax. Some words about the band from bebopspokenhere blog
"How do they do it? How can you make complex, edgy, demanding music instantly engaging? Not only that, but music that is highly expressive and beautiful too? Well, the Slowlight Quartet may comprise of four highly accomplished musicians each with exceptional intonation, making beautiful sounds, but the whole is bigger than the parts. So it s not a matter of just a locked in- tight as owt   rhythm section with a jaw droppingly wonderful saxophonist, but a band enmeshed in the communal groove. The Slowlight Quartet share a musical brain"
On Thursday March 26th, jazz@davenham is pleased to present the RACHAEL COHEN QUARTET. Rachael Cohen, a London-based alto saxophonist and composer, is one of the brightest emerging stars of her generation.  Her infectious tone mixed with her uncanny lyricism as both a composer and improviser have gained her a great deal of attention in the UK and beyond. Cohen's quartet features long-time associate James Bashford on drums, bassist Calum Gourlay & special guest Phil Robson on guitar, one of the UK s most celebrated musicians. Her album "Halftime" showcases a full program of nine strikingly original compositions from the leader and a cover from the iconic Ornette Coleman titled  Just for You .It has received multiple accolades in the press including a 4 Star review from Jazzwise & MOJO Magazine.

January 2015 Newsletter

2015 already !!!!  I hope this finds you all free from the dreaded coughs and colds that seemed to have plagued my family and that you all had a good Christmas, and that this year is  happy and healthy for  one and all .

The busy year for the theatre ended most successfully with the production of ‘The Female of the Species’.  We decided to run it for 6 nights, something we have not done for many a year, and it was a sell-out before the first night! It was a  great  week, a superb cast and crew  who worked extremely hard and deserved all the praise they got . Audience feedback was excellent and the adjudication was most positive.

As you know, we are trying to raise funds for our building project to enhance and improve the audience entrance and toilet block, so instead of a Christmas party this year, Mike Beddard  suggested we resurrect  the old tradition of carol singing around the village. So we did……. all 7 of us!!!!! On 13th Dec and raised no less than £127!!  Thanks to those who came and to John Booth who led the singing with his guitar, to the ‘Oddfellows’ and the ‘Bull’ and the Italian restaurant who allowed us to go in and sing. Unfortunately the dreaded lurgy prevented some of you coming but It was good fun and we ended up at Shaun Dunne’s where a lovely casserole and warm fire awaited us. Thank you Shaun and Lorraine.

SUBS…. SUBS……SUBS……….. DUE!  Unfortunately January is the time when I have to remind you that subs are due and at the Sept AGM it was decided to raise the amount to £20 a year. Sorry folks but it is still quite low compared to some other societies and well worth being part of such a prestigious group!!!!!!! Please either send to the treasurer:-  Don Anderson at  24 Queensgate. Castle. Northwich CW8 1DX or hand to me at one of the January events.

 REQUEST.
We are in need of a booking clerk. Someone who will man the phone to take bookings for plays. This is a very important job which Graham and Bob have undertaken for the past few plays but as Graham is directing the next play he cannot do it as well. Please let me know if you would be willing to fulfil this vitally important role.

MOULTON JOINT PRODUCTION
Next July we are planning to join forces with Moulton drama group to produce some one act plays. Both societies will perform 1 or 2 one act plays   and we will perform them 3 nights in each venue, 9-11th July at Davenham and 16-18th July at Moulton. If there is anyone with a desire to direct a play, then it is a good way to start. Please contact me if you are interested.

There is a lot happening at our theatre in January so please note ….

Could You Take On our Ticket Sales?

We have to admit that our ticket selling operation could be improved. At present, we have up to three methods by which the public may book tickets and problems have been experienced in recent sell-out shows. We urgently require someone to take ticket booking by the scruff of the neck and come up with a 21st century, maybe even automated, solution. The committee is open to all suggestions – we just want ticket booking to be permanently fixed! If anyone out there would consider being booking officer for the next and subsequent plays, please contact us here or phone 01606 45186 as we are desperately in need of one person to fulfil this very important job.

Thursday 26th February – Slowlight Quartet

Tickets can be booked by email or by phoning Harry on 01606 74502 or Dave on 01606 44253. Click here to see the Jazz page on the Davenham blog.

FEMALE OF THE SPECIES BY JOANNA MURRAY SMITH

Many congratulations to the Cast, Crew and Director of Female of the Species which was a complete sell-out for its six-night run at the theatre in November. It was clear to all that the hard work of the cast, the attention to detail of the crew and the determination of the director, Paulette Anderson,  that the production was to be just right paid off in a marvelously entertaining theatrical experience. Michaela Warrilow, the Cheshire Theatre Guild adjudicator, commented "Paulette allowed this production to be character led, an aspect within theatre that most directors are afraid to do". Paulette said "I was so pleased with the audience response and feedback. The cast deserved the praise they received and were ably supported by a great crew. I thank them and all the helpers wholeheartedly."
help Needed Now to design a Davenham Community Mosaic

Our theatre's neighbour Jan Johnson has been making progress with her amazing scheme to build and install a Community Mosaic on the end wall of the theatre yard. Jan came to the committee with a variety of interesting design proposals last week. The committee unanimously selected an option that should give people and organizations within the Davenham community the opportunity to express their part in bringing Davenham together. Jan is now preparing some detailed requirements for the design and construction of the mosaic and is ready to welcome any enthusiastic participants. If you are interested in becoming involved in any way, please contact Jan on 01606 47278.

SATURDAY 13TH DECEMBER - CAROLS AT DAVENHAM MEET 6:30PM AT THEATRE
Longstanding Davenham members will remember that, in the 'old days' it was an annual event for the Davenham Players to sing carols in the village, raising funds for the theatre and then retire to a local hostelry or house for warming refreshment. Mike Beddard suggested that we revive this ancient tradition on Saturday 13th December and it will be so. Verily, we shall meet at the theatre at 6:30pm to distribute carol sheets and maybe have a quick practise. Then we will set forth, following a friendly star, towards the village to sing at various locations and to rattle collection boxes to raise gold, frankincense and myrrh (preferably the former) for the theatre extension project. Please email Paulette if you intend to come so that we have an idea of numbers. NOTE: A torch might be useful!

Carols at Davenham Saturday 13th December

I know it's a bit early to talk about carol singing, but I thought you would like to know about this event in advance as diaries do get full around this time of year. Longstanding Davenham members will remember that, in the 'old days' it was an annual event for the Davenham Players to sing carols in the village, raising funds for the theatre and then retire to a local hostelry or house for warming refreshment. Mike Beddard has suggested that we revive this tradition on Saturday 13th December. So make a note to come and join us on that day – details of where and time to meet will be announced in good time.
