Set in 1934 on the remote Aran Island community of Inishmaan, off the West coast of Ireland , 'The Cripple of Inishmaan' is a strange and comic tale in the great tradition of Irish story telling. The inhabitants are excited to learn that Hollywood director Robert Flaherty is coming to the neighbouring island of Inishmore to make a documentary about life on the islands, to be called 'Man of Aran'.
As word of the filming reaches Inishmaan, the one person who wants to be in the film more than anyone is young ‘Cripple’ Billy Claven, eager to escape the gossip, poverty, and bitter tedium of his daily life. Billy tries for a part and, despite his crippled arm and leg and to everyone's surprise, the orphan and outcast - gets cast !
'The Cripple of Inishmaan' premiered at the Royal National Theatre in December 1996 and the author, Martin McDonagh, won the Evening Standard Award for the most promising playwright that year.
Davenham and Sandiway Players now present 'The Cripple of Inishmaan', directed by Barbara Crellin, at the Players Theatre Davenham, opening on Tuesday 1st until Saturday 5th November at 7:30pm. Tickets £7.00 and Enquiries from Bob on 01606 45186 or email dsp.blog1@btinternet.com.
